found frames

use your hands, a piece of paper, or any object with a hole to create a frame. look through it and photograph what you see — discover how framing changes meaning.

materials

  • camera
  • something to use as a frame (hands
  • cardboard with a hole
  • a toilet roll tube
  • a window)

instructions

  1. 1

make or find a frame. cut a rectangle in cardboard, use a toilet roll tube, or simply make a rectangle with your thumbs and forefingers.

  2. 2

hold your frame up and look through it. move it around until something interesting appears inside.

  3. 3

photograph what you see through the frame. take at least 3 captures from different spots.

  4. 4

now remove the frame and photograph the same scenes without it.

  5. 5

compare framed vs. unframed. annotate: what does the frame include? what does it leave out? how does that change the story?
